Fernando Mendoza’s Impressive Debut Raises Stakes for Raiders

Fernando Mendoza's impressive debut in Raiders training camp has quickly become one of the most talked‑about storylines heading into Thursday's preseason showdown with the Houston Texans. As the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft and a former Heisman Trophy winner, Mendoza is already pushing veteran starter Kirk Cousins for the starting role. In limited action during practice, the rookie displayed poise, accuracy, and a quick release that has coaches taking notice.

While Cousins remains the incumbent, the competition is heating up, and both quarterbacks know that a strong performance in Houston could shift the depth chart. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Mendoza handles the pressure of a live NFL environment, and whether his early promise can translate into regular‑season opportunities.
