Maryland Man’s Generous Gesture Almost Cost Him $50,000

John Hamilton Jr., an Air Force veteran from Cumberland, Maryland, found himself in a surprising moral dilemma after scratching a winning ticket in the $5,000,000 LUXE game. The ticket, worth $50,000, could have easily changed his life, but Hamilton's generosity almost cost him the prize.

According to the Maryland Lottery, Hamilton visited the agency's Baltimore headquarters on July 21 to claim his winnings. However, before making the trip, he considered handing the ticket over to a friend who had been hoping for a big break. The gesture, while noble, would have meant forfeiting the cash prize.

In the end, Hamilton decided to claim the prize himself, securing the $50,000 windfall. The story highlights both the excitement of lottery wins and the unexpected ethical crossroads they can create.

The Maryland Lottery praised Hamilton's eventual decision to claim the prize and reminded players that winners must present their tickets in person to receive payouts.
