Vegas Myths Busted: The Real History Behind the Strip's Naked City Neighborhood

Las Vegas is a city built on legends, tall tales, and glittering urban myths, but few neighborhood names spark as much curiosity as Naked City. Dating back to the 1960s, this historic Las Vegas community near the famous Strip has carried a provocative moniker for decades. As part of an ongoing series exploring local lore, researchers recently revisited the origins of this bizarre neighborhood name to separate historical fact from downtown fiction.

Why was Naked City actually named that?

The popular legend surrounding the neighborhood claims that it earned its title because of the residents who once lived there. Back in the 1960s, before urban development shifted the landscape, the Meadows Addition neighborhood was considered a desirable residential pocket close to the major casino resorts. Showgirls working at legendary venues along the Las Vegas Strip frequently rented apartments in this area. According to local lore, these performers loved to sunbathe completely naked by their apartment swimming pools to avoid getting harsh tan lines during the hot desert days. Locals and visitors took notice of these sunbathing routines, and the cheeky nickname quickly stuck.

What is the truth behind the sunbathing showgirl legend?

While the tale of tanning showgirls sounds like vintage Hollywood fiction, local historians confirm that the story holds a surprising amount of truth. Showgirls from the golden era of the Las Vegas Strip truly did populate the neighborhood, and private apartment complexes in the area offered secluded pools away from the bustling tourist corridors. Performers needed flawless, tan line-free skin for their revealing stage costumes, making backyard sunbathing a daily routine. While many vintage Las Vegas myths exaggerate the reality of early town history, the Naked City moniker genuinely stems from the lifestyle of these iconic entertainers.

How has the neighborhood changed today?

Modern visitors exploring the area today will find a stark contrast to the glamorous 1960s era of showgirl residents. Urban expansion, shifting demographics, and decades of commercial development transformed the Meadows Addition completely. The residential charm of the mid-century era gave way to modern city infrastructure, though the notorious name remains etched in local folklore. Fans of classic casino history still visit the perimeters of the old neighborhood to retrace the steps of vintage performers who helped build the legendary entertainment capital of the world.
